Margulis–Platonov Conjecture: OpenAI Claims a Full Proof

About this video
The Margulis–Platonov conjecture describes every normal subgroup of the rational points G(k) of an absolutely almost simple, simply connected algebraic group over a global field k: each noncentral one should come from an open normal subgroup of the product of the group's anisotropic nonarchimedean local groups. OpenAI claims a proof over number fields and over every global function field, including characteristic two. These are OpenAI's claims and have not yet been peer reviewed.
The dots are rational unit quaternions a + bi + cj + dk with a² + b² + c² + d² = 1, drawn in stereographic coordinates. Conjugating by g = (3 + 4i)/5 or (1 + 2j + 2k)/3 rotates them. The gold dots, where 2 − 2a is divisible by 16, form a normal subgroup: scattered in real space, but one ball when laid out by the 2-adic digits of 2 − 2a. For this group the only anisotropic nonarchimedean place is 2, so the conjecture says every noncentral normal subgroup comes from the 2-adic side.
The animation illustrates the result; it is not a proof.

Original visuals (three.js) and synthesized sound: each twist is a shimmer, and the 2-adic tree is a falling run of bells, one per digit.

The Margulis–Platonov conjecture over global fields
Proves the Margulis–Platonov conjecture over every global field, including function fields of characteristic two. For an absolutely almost simple simply connected algebraic group G over k, every noncentral abstract normal subgroup of G(k) is the inverse image of an open normal subgroup in the finite product of its anisotropic nonarchimedean local groups.
